5 Noteworthy Books for Black History Month

Curated by Librarian Allyson Mower

Black History Month is a time to honor the rich cultural and historical contributions of the black community, past and present. It serves as a reminder of the struggles for equality and justice, as well as the accomplishments that have shaped the world today. The following books offer powerful insights into Black life, history, and culture, making them perfect reads for this special month.

The Obama Portraits
By Taina Caragol

Artist Amy Sherald painted Michelle Obama’s portrait and I got to see it as part of an exhibition of Sherald’s work currently on display at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Sherald’s portraits are amazing and beautiful. This book sheds light on not only Sherald’s work, but the general impact works of art and fuller representation have on American culture.

Blk Mrkt Vintage
By Kiyanna Stewart

This beautiful photo book shows the author’s vision to collect historical objects and artifacts that tell compelling Black stories.

Gather Me
By Glory Edim

I love memoirs about reading! And this one doesn’t disappoint. Glory Edim is the founder of Well-Read Black Girl who started a revolution on social media in getting people to read great books and come to a closer understanding of the power of stories and storytelling.

I Just Keep Talking
By Nell Irvin Painter

This new book of collected essays and art provides an excellent introduction to Painter’s works. It’s organized by broad categories (such as White history) and offers quick, short, impactful thoughts on current events steeped in Black history in America.

Smoke Kings
By Jamal Mayfield

A reference to The Song of the Smoke poem by W.E.B. DuBois, this social justice crime novel kept me in suspense. I couldn’t put it down and read it in a couple of days during the winter break. I wanted a slightly different ending, but the writing, history, and storytelling made it worth it.
