Kicking-Off the Ski Season in Style

The 28th Annual Ski Affair, benefiting the library’s Ski Archives, was a stunning success! More than 480 attendees convened at Little America Hotel on October 30 for an auction, dinner, and awards ceremony.  This year’s awardees include:

The History Maker Award

This award went to The Utah Avalanche Center, a collaborative between the U.S. Forest Service and a nonprofit organization. They work statewide to provide vital education, resources, and avalanche safety information for backcountry skiers, hikers, and snowboarders. There to receive the award was Chad Brackelsberg, Executive Director of the Utah Avalanche Center, and Mark Staples, Director of the Forest Service side of the Utah Avalanche Center.

The S.J. Quinney Award

This award went to Howard Peterson, who was a driving force behind the establishment and nurturing of Soldier Hollow cross-country and biathlon venue near Heber City, UT, a venue that today is a thriving legacy of Utah’s staging the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.  He also is former president of the U.S. Ski Team and a member of the group that formed the Cross Country Ski Areas Association in 1977.

The Sue Raemer Award

This award went to Judy Jarrow, Program Manager in Special Collections. Judy has worked in the Marriott Library for more than 35 years. She has seen a total of 28 fabulous Ski Affair events and has actively participated in the growth of the Utah Ski Archives, the largest archive of its type in the nation.
