Welcome to the Fall 2022 Semester at the University of Utah. What an exciting and busy time it is around the Marriott Library and across campus. It has been wonderful seeing so many new and returning faces around ProtoSpace and learning about the exciting projects and research you will be pursuing this year. As we move into our third week of the semester, you will soon learn about many upcoming events and workshops being presented in ProtoSpace through Creativity & Innovation Services. What better time than now to share what GIS Services has prepared for you this semester.

Weekly Drop-In GIS Sessions

As more events and activities become available in-person, I am excited to announce that we are bringing back our weekly Drop-In GIS Sessions. These open sessions are a great opportunity to visit ProtoSpace and discuss geospatial projects you are developing while receiving expert collaborative assistance. No worries if you don’t have a computer with GIS software installed to bring along…we’ve got you covered! The GIS / Data Visualization area of ProtoSpace 2751 contains (8) high-performance computer workstations designed with computational analysis in mind, loaded with a growing array of GIS and data visualization software for your project and research development.

Drop-In Sessions will be held weekly throughout fall semester on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 9:00am – 12:00pm in ProtoSpace 2751. Computer workstations in this suite can be accessed during open hours of the ProtoSpace 2751 suite or when scheduled events in this space are not being conducted – (please see the online room scheduler for more information).

Creating 3D City Landscape Models – (A 3-Part Workshop Series)

A new workshop series comes to ProtoSpace this semester entitled “Creating 3D City Landscape Models“. This 3-part workshop series instructs individuals on the processes and applications for creating and printing detailed 3D city landscape models of various locations at a beginner, intermediate, and advanced level. Attendance at all workshops in this series is highly recommended as each workshop will progress upon concepts presented in the previous lessons materials.

The workshop series will be held on the following dates / times:

• Beginner Workshop
  • Monday October 17, 2022 from 1:00pm – 2:00pm in ProtoSpace 2751
• Intermediate Workshop
  • Monday October 24, 2022 from 1:00pm – 2:00pm in ProtoSpace 2751
• Advanced Workshop
  • Monday October 31, 2022 from 1:00pm – 2:00pm in ProtoSpace 2751

GIS and data visualization tools are powerful resources available, but sometimes it can be difficult to know where to get started or how to apply it to your projects and research.
