Jan 08, 2025 ProtoSpace Services Open to Entire U Community
ProtoSpace is the one-stop shop for all things “maker-space” – 3D scanners, 3D printers, VR, video booths and even sewing machines. But the kicker is that you needn’t be skilled in operating the devices, as there are experts on-hand to assist. And ProtoSpace is not only open to students and faculty. It’s open to all U staff as well.
Here’s one story from the director of the U’s Writing Center.
“As the director of the University Writing Center, located in Marriott Library, I’ve had the privilege of working in the library for over a decade. In that time, I’ve witnessed many transformations, but one that stands out is the dramatic change across the hall from my office. What was once a quiet space filled with stacks of books is now ProtoSpace, a popular hub dedicated to digital projects.
When ProtoSpace first opened, I didn’t feel like the space was for me. With relatively little interest in gaming and VR, I wasn’t sure how gaming consoles, VR setups, and 3D printers could be relevant to my work or home life. That all changed, though, when my eight-year-old son asked for an overpriced 3D-printed dragon at a local toy store.
The next day, I walked over to the ProtoSpace Information Desk, hoping to learn more about the 3D printing technology available to students, faculty, and staff. To my good fortune, Auri and Hannah were eager to help. Auri, in particular, was not only knowledgeable about 3D printing but also shared a passion for dragons and their lore. He guided me through every step of the process: finding the perfect “flexi-dragon” model, downloading it, slicing it in the PrusaSlicer app, and even ordering the PLA filament online.
Once the filament arrived, Auri showed my son and me how to load it into the 3D printer and start the print. Together, we created 25 dragons – three different types and in four colors. My son and I had a blast, and he proudly gifted the dragons to his entire 2nd-grade class.
What began as a simple request for a toy turned into a rewarding hands-on learning experience. More importantly, it reminded me of the value of stepping in and out of different modes of creative expression. As a hub for innovation and collaboration, ProtoSpace strengthens partnerships across the library and campus, fostering connections among students, faculty and staff. I’ve noticed that students often stop by to ask questions and build relationships, creating a vibrant sense of community that aligns with the Writing Center’s mission to support student success. Creativity and community thrive when resources and expertise come together – and that’s what makes ProtoSpace so special.
