Oct 06, 2025 Finding Support and Community in ProtoSpace with Games Major Gojo Zhang
When he was 14, Gojo, originally from Japan, attended Oxford University and graduated with two undergraduate degrees – physics and cosmology. Now, at 18, he’s working on his graduate degree in games, through the Entertainment, Arts and Engineering program.
Not only is Gojo a games major at the University, but he’s also a top ranked Fortnite player; he has already received two degrees and he’s only 18 years old. “I came to the University of Utah for my master’s in games,” explained Zhang. “I picked games over physics because I love gaming that much.”
Gojo hasn’t been without his share of struggles, however. He has faced health issues all his life including hallucination, psychosis and a muscular dystrophy diagnosis. “I fought against all of this and came to where I am now. Without ProtoSpace, I would never have found my supportive friends.”
As a games major, Gojo spends a lot of time in building 72 (the games building), but has found connections in the ProtoSpace at the Marriott Library. “I came to love the ProtoSpace because I had more friends there. I recently met my new best friend there, Iverson. If not for the ProtoSpace, I would have never found him.”
To those who have yet to check out the ProtoSpace, Gojo recommends simply coming in, finding a station and trying it out along with the promise that, “You can catch me in ProtoSpace almost every day!”
“I came to love the ProtoSpace because I had more friends there. I recently met my new best friend there, Iverson. If not for the ProtoSpace, I would have never found him.”

In addition to the help desk in ProtoSpace, the staff hold weekly “How-to ProtoSpace” events to help students learn new skills using tools in the space such as 3D scanning and printing, artificial intelligence, VR, sewing and more.
