Ski Affair’s Silver Anniversary an Event to Remember

Effervescent. Joyful. Maybe a bit Raucous.

Words to describe the annual Ski Affair, a benefit for Special Collections’ Ski Archives. And this year, the silver anniversary for the event, was certainly no exception. More than 500 happy guests attended this year’s event, held the evening of November 5. They bid on auction items, visited with ski buddies, and enjoyed dinner and the program.

This year’s event included honoring the late Dick Bass with the S. Joseph Quinney Award, which his son Jim Bass accepted on his behalf. Dick Bass was a co-founder of Snowbird Ski Resort and a beloved community figure who was known for his love of nature, poetry, and people. He was also noted as being the first person to climb the highest mountain on each of the seven continents. His contributions to Utah’s ski industry are immeasurable.

The History-Maker Award was given to Ski Utah for the organization’s outstanding role in promoting and supporting the winter sports industry in Utah for the past 40 years.

“The most important thing that Ski Utah does is to foster the relationships between the resorts and all the businesses in the ski industry,” said Ski Utah President Nathan Rafferty as he accepted the award.

The Sue Raemer Award, named for the late founder of the Utah Ski Archives, was bestowed to long-time volunteer Dan Meldrum. Dan has served on the Ski Archives Board since 2009, focusing most recently on growing the corporate sponsors, which has significantly increased revenues. We appreciate all of Dan’s time, talents, and efforts!

The Utah Ski Archives is the largest of its kind in the nation. It contains thousands of collections from individuals, the ski and snowboard industry, and the competition community. Wonderful historic photographs, films, scrapbooks, and manuscripts can be found here.
