Mar 05, 2026 Education, Research and Student Success
Dean’s Message, March 2026
One of the great joys of working in the Marriott Library is witnessing history come to life and celebrating the incredible successes of our students. Recently, one of our librarians conducted interviews with several first-generation students and created First-Gen Voices. I have been deeply moved by the optimistic – and often touching – stories of how education is transforming lives and by the remarkable contributions these students are already making in our community. A set of discussion questions accompanies these interviews that can help us reflect on what we can do to better support these students.
We’re also delighted to share the story of Madelyn Cannon Stewart Silver, a gifted poet and playwright whose legacy continues to inspire. Her biography, Madelyn Cannon Stewart Silver: Poet, Teacher, Homemaker by Leonard Arrington, has recently been digitized and is now available online via our Digital Library. Our Special Collections team is also partnering with Silver’s son to gather and digitize her papers, ensuring that her voice and work will be accessible for generations to come.
And there’s more to celebrate! I’m thrilled to invite you-all to our first inaugural Image of Research celebration happening on Tuesday, March 31 at 11:30 in the Gould Auditorium. This exciting new contest, co-sponsored by the Marriott Library and the Office of the Vice President for Research, will showcase images and videos submitted by graduate students, faculty, and research staff that capture the essence and spirit of their research. The judges have selected the top 20 entries which will be on display. During the celebration, you will get to vote for the People’s Choice winner, connect with colleagues and enjoy refreshments.
There is always something happening in the library, and I invite you to stop by — explore our exhibitions and book displays and take in the energizing hum of students collaborating, creating and discovering together.
Warmest regards,

Sarah L. Shreeves
