Throughout the Years: Historical and Comparative Views of the University of Utah Campus

Welcome to a new semester at the University of Utah and a new series of Map of the Weeks. #MapMonday

Throughout the semester, GIS Services will be releasing a series of bi-weekly maps on a variety of topics demonstrating ideas and uses for incorporating geospatial technology into your projects and research.

Our first Map of the Week for August 21st examines how historic photographs and aerial imagery can be presented and analyzed through a geospatial application.

About the Map of the Week:

Throughout the Years: Historical and Comparative Views of the University of Utah Campus

Founded in 1850, the University of Utah has undergone numerous changes and developments over time; however, many of the original buildings and features of this flagship institution of higher learning can still be found today. This week’s interactive map was developed utilizing the web mapping capabilities of ArcGIS Online, allowing viewers the opportunity to examine some of the historic campus photographs found at the J. Willard Marriott Library while comparing them side-by-side to present-day images captured for each location. Complementing the “then and now” comparison of these historic photographs is an interactive historic overlay from 1958, georeferenced and aligned to visualize changes to the campus layout spanning a 60-year period through an interactive “looking glass” viewer.
