Jan 26, 2018 Project Rotation 2: Electric Boogaloo
Hello, internet! The semester has started and things are in full-swing. And that means I have started the work for my second rotation. This semester, I am located in Research and User Services and Copyright and Scholarly Communication. Copyright and Reference are two things I have a lot of experience in, so I’m excited to get back into something I’m used to for awhile.
For RUS, my project is not so much a project as it is the standard workday of a reference/instruction librarian. I serve as a subject liaison, I make LibGuides, I teach library skills to courses, the whole nine yards. Right now, I’m overhauling the Ethnic Studies guides and creating guides for the disciplines contained within Ethnic Studies. One thing I’m enjoying is standardizing the format for subject guides that I make. I am also enjoying researching these disciplines that I know of from experience but have never studies academically outside of perhaps a literary theory context. The research study that I developed is also going along well. We got permission from the LEAP coordinator to administer our “research diary” in the classes that want to do so. After we put the research instrument in the course management pages, then it’s smooth sailing until we have to analyze our data.
For copyright, I am making a guide about Public Performance Rights. Doing the research for this was really fun because every institution is going to have their own unique policies on top of copyright law. For instance, I discovered that our Public Performance policy hasn’t been updated since 1984. I haven’t started the cataloging project to classify the films that we own the PPR for, but I’m really looking forward to that.
Other than that, things are going along smoothly for our Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon, and I have some other exciting academic pursuits.
See you at Midwinter!
