Barlow Bradford was the conductor for the University of Utah Chamber Choir, who won the 2015 European Gran  Prix for Choral Singing. In 2014, the University of Utah Chamber Choir was invited to participate in the Florilege International Competition for choirs in Tours, France.  They were invited as a result of sending audio recordings to the screening panel of the choir singing in performance the previous 3 years.  The Florilege competition is one of seven choir competitions in Europe.  In 2014, they won the Florilege competition and as a result, were invited to compete in the European Gran Prix against the other winners of those seven European competitions.  In May of 2015 they did just that and won the European Gran Prix

Kim Martinez has created a cross-disciplinary mural at Esperanza Elementary. Community commissioned who identified a desire to include the arts as a vehicle to create culturally and socially empowering environment on the campus. Research Phase: 6 students Spring #4540 Art Teaching, provided approximately 480 hours in class and after-school instruction for K-6, supervised by Martinez & Rosi Hayes. May 07, 2015 youth exhibition at Festival de Primavera on the Granger High. After-school art programming developed with U student, subsequently hired after graduation. Efforts to create sustainable arts curricula, letters of support to: 21st Century Community Learning Centers Utah Office of Childcare Department of Workforce Services Utah Division of Arts and Museums Project Grant Fall, 11 students #4180 invested 1400 hours to complete the 1586 square foot mural, with input through conversations and social media. Created 11 designs presented to the community who made the final design selection. The mural contains individual conceptual energy to celebrate the rich cultural history and curricula of the schools almost 98 percent Latino population. December 17-19, 9 scholarships to the Social and Political Art Resource Center (SPARC), guided mural tours, meet with Judy Baca (UCLA), Los Angeles. Project Goals: Cross-disciplinary, elementary curricula development, mural, student residencies & establishing community partnership.

The plastic grocery bag is a common by-product of consumer culture. It is not viewed as valuable beyond its limited use. It will never biodegrade “surviving for centuries in landfills, contaminating oceans and endangering species. Through creative reuse of this utilitarian, disposable material I am inspired by the traditional craft of weaving, yet with materials that are considered consumer debris” often used once, and very briefly, and then discarded. “Our Cross” is inspired by Navajo tradition, in which weaving is considered prayer in motion. This tapestry functions as a material prayer for the earth, using materials that the earth cannot digest while also serving as a reminder that our impact will be the cross that future generations will inevitably bear. “Our Cross” is extraordinary in that it explores new methods of weaving of reclaimed plastics. It has also been accepted into three juried exhibitions in 2015. In January, it was featured in the nationally juried exhibition The Art of Our Consumption at the Foundry Art Centre, St. Charles, Missouri, Juror: Roscoe Wilson. In November 2015 it was accepted into the 2015 Utah Arts & Museums Statewide Annual Exhibition, Rio Gallery, Salt Lake City; Jurors: Kate Bonansinga and Joshua Chuang. In December it was accepted into the 31st Positive/Negative National Juried Art Exhibition, East Tennessee State University, Juror: Al Minor, Museum of Fine Arts Boston.

The Girl Scout cabin project was central to their winning two major awards that recognize a body of creative work and achievement early in a teaching career from the national ACSA (Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture), the 2016 ACSA/AIAS New Faculty Teaching Award, and the 2016 AIA (American Institute of Architects) Young Architects Award.

The first national recognition of disparities in access to information technologies - a digital divide - surfaced in a 1995 report by The National Telecommunication and Information Administration. Despite efforts to close the gap and promote digital inclusion, statistical data over the course of nearly 20 years indicate a significant disparity remains in poor and minority communities. In this accessible yet scholarly work, Joy Pierce illustrates the need to examine the societal status of information technologies at the micro level. Digital Fusion is a sustained and integrated project that combines more than a decade of community participatory research in two regions of the United States. Using qualitative research methods and drawing from critical cultural studies and social theory, Digital Fusion is an interdisciplinary project that engages digital literacy and social justice issues related to race, ethnicity, language, class, and education. Thought-provoking, multi-vocal, and multi-lingual narratives from racial and ethnic minorities as well as institutional administrators lay the groundwork for potential policy implications and digital infrastructure and design. Digital Fusion illuminates the complexities of digital access and use at the micro-level and offers a participatory project that seeks to co-create a digital space; one that speaks to the specific cultural, linguistic, and social needs of underrepresented communities.

Family Violence Across the Life Course: Research, Policy and Prevention offers a fresh look at the research, policy and prevention work related to family violence coming from an ecological and life course perspective. Based on the author’s 20+ years of experience, Family Violence Across the Life Course: Research, Policy and Prevention:

• Includes recognition of the process of cultural change as well as mounting evidence of survivor resilience, even under conditions of oppression.
• Features the author’s various research projects that uncover some of the patterns of mistreatment across various populations and settings.
• Features a recognition of a continuum, with combinations of types of maltreatment that may occur simultaneously. These abusive behaviors include sexual assault, confinement, psychological harm, coercive control, financial exploitation, neglect and even human trafficking.
• Examines the intended and unintended consequences of policy, laws and methods of enforcement and stresses the importance of further evaluation to improve to ensure optimal outcomes.

DNA is the long-term storage unit for genetic information and the encoder of instructions for cellular function. However, access to this information is regulated in part by surface chemical changes to DNA, termed epigenetic modifications. In mammals, methylation of cytosine DNA bases is a prevalent epigenetic modification found in normal cells that is required for genomic stability and control of gene expression. When these DNA methylation patterns are misregulated, they can lead to inappropriate gene silencing and the onset of many diseases, including cancer. The ZBTB family consists of three members and represents a set of specialized transcription factors, termed methyl-CpG binding proteins (MBPs), that specifically recognize methylated DNA sites and mediate gene silencing. Of particular interest, prostate cancer cells produce these proteins at higher levels in a manner that correlates with increasing tumorigenicity, allowing for regulation of gene expression that promotes the disease state. While there is a clear link for the biological activities of these proteins in cancer, we have only begun to understand the underlying complexities by which they mediate gene expression. Thus, we utilize a multidisciplinary approach consisting of parallel in vitro biophysical and in cell genomic methodologies to delineate the mechanisms by which these MBPs recognize their specific DNA targets and regulate gene expression in cancer. Specifically, we aim to identify and characterize the biological activities of these MBPs in prostate cancer, with the goals of developing innovative methodologies for identifying cancer-specific genes and advancing our understanding of their molecular basis for DNA recognition.

The purpose of this three-year interdisciplinary research program is to investigate nature-based activities' therapeutic effects on Armed Forces personnel, veterans, and their families. Sponsored by the Kendeda Fund, the research team is led by Drs. Dan Dustin, Kelly Bricker, and Matt Brownlee from the College of Health's Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism, Dr. Kevin Rathunde from the College of Social and Behavioral Science's Department of Family and Consumer Studies, and Dr. Craig Bryan, Executive Director of the University of Utah's National Center for Veterans Studies. The research team will address questions related to nature-based activities' mental health benefits for military personnel and veterans coping with Posttraumatic Stress, Traumatic Brain Injury, and other combat-related afflictions, and questions related to nature-based activities' contributions to improving family functioning within the military community. The research team will collaborate with the United States' Armed Forces and several non-profit nature-based organizations serving our military family in carrying out its work.

The Superheroes Social Skills Training program was developed by Dr. William Jenson, Dr. Elaine Clark, and Dr. Julie Bowen and a team of graduate students to fill the need for a comprehensive, research based social skills training program. Several studies have documented that children on the autism spectrum can learn social skills but rarely use them in needed situations. This research has shown that adults in artificial situations, trying to teach social skills to children on the spectrum were highly ineffective. Taking the adults out of the training situation and replacing them with Superheroes (Initiator Man, Interactor Girl, and Scooter the Robot) and adding child-friendly teaching techniques such as Fasthands animation, digital comic books, and peer models, has significantly increased the learning and use of social skills. This program teaches eighteen essential social skills, such as problem solving, conversation skills, managing bullying, and friend making. The efficacy of the Superheroes Social Skills training program has been documented by sixteen empirical studies, making it one of the most studied social skills programs for children on the autism spectrum and leading to a 1.25 million dollar federally funded training program for school psychologists at the University of Utah.
