Oct 03, 2024 Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Patent & Trademark Resource Center at the Marriott Library
The Marriott Library’s Patent & Trademark Resource Center (PTRC) was the first stop on the US Patent & Trademark Office’s (USPTO) Create and Innovate Tour. PTRCs are a nationwide network of libraries that support the USPTO.
On September 24, 2024, we celebrated our 40th Anniversary of what was the first Patent Depository Library in Utah. It was established on April 6, 1984, by Juli Hinz, who is now Emeritus Librarian. For more than 30 years, Dave Morrison, Emeritus Librarian, served as the representative for the USPTO.
The 40th Anniversary Celebration featured remarks from Kathi Vidal, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the USPTO, followed by a vibrant panel discussion moderated by the Hinckley Institute of Politics‘ Nick Cockrell, with panelists Director Vidal, Bryce Hansen, Manager of Salt Lake City’s Small Business Development Center, and Amanda LeMatty, local inventor and Program Manager for the Center for Medical Innovation. Over 100 people attended the Celebration in-person and enjoyed cake and networking opportunities. The Celebration’s recording is available on YouTube.
After the Celebration, there were a series of intellectual property (IP) workshops on patents, trademarks, and IP in specific industries. Over 515 people learned about IP during these and other guest lectures and workshops throughout the week of September 23-26, 2024, with the USPTO employees from the Rocky Mountain Regional Outreach Office, PTRC Program, and other groups. One of the larger workshops was the full-day China IP Road Show at the S.J. Quinney College of Law on September 25, 2024. Attendees learned strategies for protecting and enforcing IP in the People’s Republic of China.
If you missed this fantastic week of events with the USPTO, you can still learn about IP with your PTRC representatives, Alfred Mowdood and Tallie Casucci. Listed below are some of their favorite IP resources:
- USPTO’s IP Identifier tool – learn to identify and protect your IP
- USPTO’s Patent Basics
- USPTO’s Trademark Basics
- USPTO’s Rocky Mountain Regional Outreach Office, based in Denver, CO, offers free consultations with inventors and small businesses
