Dean’s Message, February 2020

Remarkable People,
Remarkable Library

With fresh powder on the mountain slopes, and the new semester in full swing, this is the time of year for exciting adventures and new discoveries, but I find it is also an ideal time to reflect upon how the excellent library faculty and staff of the Marriott Library connect with our students, staff, faculty, and researchers, as well as community members. Below are a few examples of the remarkable people working in this remarkable Library.

Several of our staff recently worked with professor Alborz Ghandehari and his students in the Ethnic Studies department on a project collecting oral histories of refugees and migrants as well as tracking global migrations. This project involved three library departments, including GIS, Digital Operations, and Digital Scholarship Services. Dr. Ghandehari expressed his deep appreciation to our staff: “Your time, labor, and skills have been invaluable. I am so pleased with the way the project has turned out.”

Dr. Greg Thompson, Associate Dean for Special Collections and University Archivist, was honored by his peers for his work with Utah history, including helping to develop histories and archives for fifteen Western tribes. The Utah Division of State History recently honored Dr. Greg Thompson with their most prestigious award (LINK).

Another example is the work that librarian Marie Paiva has done over the past twenty years in helping librarians in Ethiopia improve their libraries. Most of Marie’s time has been spent at the Addis Ababa University Library where she has assisted with everything from cataloguing to security.

I feel grateful to be surrounded by such talented and devoted people. It is because of them that the Marriott Library continues to be “All U Need” by providing outstanding services and resources to our users.
