Jumping into the New Year, the New Semester

Dean’s Message, January 2026

And just like that – we’re into the new year and spring semester is well underway.

Things that I’m looking forward to include MLK Week at the U, when the library will be hosting a live webinar with Dr. Andrea Baldwin, Working for Civil Rights Today. In keeping with this year’s theme, “The Time is Always Right to Do What is Right,” (quote by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.), this event will probe the question of what we should be doing now to further the cause of civil rights across the nation. Dr. Baldwin will lead the conversation, with three panelists. Those interested in attending should register now.

We also have a wonderful new way to celebrate the research happening across campus with the Image of Research competition. Co-sponsored by the J. Willard Marriott Library and the Office of the Vice President for Research, the Image of Researchinitiative is inspired by the University of Illinois’ Image of Research at both Urbana-Champaign and Chicago. Participants are invited to capture the essence of their research, scholarly or creative work through a single, striking image or a short video. Cash prizes will be awarded to winners, with a firstplace award of $600.Use this form to submit; the deadline is Saturday, January 24.

The library always has something happening; consider stopping by to see our new browsing collection on level 3, enjoy exhibitions or to grab a coffee and take a break. Happy New Year and here’s to another great start of teaching, research and learning.
