Jan 11, 2016 Happy New Year from Creative Spaces
Happy New Year! My name is TJ, and I have the pleasure to serve as the Assistant Head of Creativity & Innovation Services, heading up the Library’s Creative Spaces endeavors. In collaboration with Student Computing Services my team runs the Marriott Library’s 3D Printing services, providing access to 3D printers, scanners, and the knowledge and skills required to fabricate 3D objects from digital assets. It’s a very exciting time to be at the Library!
There’s a lot going on this semester, and as you may recall from Greg’s December 7th post, the Marriott Library is forging ahead to promote our new strategic directions. In support of these directions, we will be offering workshops aimed at familiarizing students, faculty, and staff with the 3D printing, scanning, and modeling processes which have been proliferating in recent years. As time moves on, the barriers to entry for rapid prototyping and digital fabrication processes continue to disappear, and we hope to engage your creative skills using these exciting technologies. Whether you’re interested in modeling on your own, printing the latest prototype, or just checking out a new technology, we’re interested in hearing from you!
Spring 2016 workshops start this week and cover a variety of 3D media topics such as 3D printing, scanning, and modeling. Starting the first week of the semester we will offer workshops which introduce users to the Marriott Library’s TAZ 4 3D printers, including how to find, prepare, and print digital models. The advanced DIY workshop will introduce users to some of the detailed nuances of the printing process to maximize successful outcomes. Further still, there are offerings which cover the creation of 3D models using industry standard tools, the use of Arduino and Raspberry Pi microcontrollers in projects, and a workshop on 3D scanning using the Library’s 3D scanners.
For a complete list of workshops at the Marriott Library, including the above mentioned 3D media offerings, please see https://eventregistration.tools.lib.utah.edu/.
