Listen to the full interview:

Fourth Street Clinic helps homeless Utahns improve their health and quality of life by providing high quality health care and support services.

After working five years in Digital Operations, Cedar Gonzalez has been hired to work by the Fourth Street Clinic as a Community Health Worker. She’ll be working with the SLC homeless communities to help make sure “their basic health care needs are met.”

Gonzalez graduated with a Bachelors in communications with a journalism emphasis (as well as a minor in documentary studies) after being at the University of Utah for five years. For her entire school career, she’s been working in at the J. Willard Marriott Library helping the digitization of documents through various cameras. “I got the job through photography since I knew cameras and the technologies to edit images.”

After taking some professional development programs offered to our employees here at the library, Gonzalez honed her skills especially in writing a resume and a cover letter. “It was really, really helpful to learn what kind of accomplishments you need to put on there, like projects that you’ve been involved with and stuff like that.” She credits those courses in helping her know how to apply for her first career. “I just want to say thanks to everyone who hired me and who’s been here throughout the five years. It has been my favorite job and I’ve really enjoyed working here. It’s made being a student a lot easier and less stressful.”

On the question of advising incoming freshman & transfer students who may be looking for a job at the library, Gonzalez replied, “Working at the library is awesome. Definitely work at the library. Definitely apply. If you don’t get it the first time, keep applying. There’s lots of positions here.”
