Mar 05, 2019 New Digital Collection: Harold Stanley Sanders Matchbooks
Be sure to check out the most recent digital collection added to the J. Willard Marriott Digital Library, the Harold Stanley Sanders Matchbooks Collection. This collection consists of nearly 680 matchbooks collected by “Stan” Sanders, father of the local Salt Lake City legend, Ken Sanders, which is part of the Harold Stanley Collection, 1803-2002 held in Special Collections. While it is difficult to date these matchbooks, it is estimated they were made during the the 1930s to the 1970s and reflect many bygone establishments including restaurants, bars, hotels, and even fuel companies in Salt Lake City and other areas of Utah. Below are just a few highlights from the collection.
As matchbooks are a form of advertising, they include street addresses of the business being promoted. Included in the metadata for this collection is exact latitude and longitude data of these locations. The data for this collection, including this additional geospatial metadata and more, will soon be available on the Marriott Library Collections as Data GitHub repository.
