Digital Library Services and Special Collections collaborate to make unique and rare materials available in the Digital Library. The collections listed below represent the work of archivists, staff, student workers, and librarians to ensure that digital collections are discoverable in the Digital Library and preserved in our digital preservation system when applicable. This post provides a round-up of materials that are newly available in the Digital Library for the first 3 months of 2025. Collection numbers for the materials in Special Collections are listed along with the digital collections links.
Manuscripts
- Ariel S. Ballif Jr. papers (ACCN2127) – Costume, set design, and production notes from Ariel S. Ballif Jr.
- Affirmation: Gay and Lesbian Mormon records (ACCN1867) – Affirmation: the Gay and Lesbian Mormons records contains correspondence, conference materials, flyers, programs, brochures, newsletters, and news clippings, most dealing with the Affirmation organization.
- Joseph Lafayette Rawlins papers (MS0189) – The Joseph Lafayette Rawlins papers (1885-1964) contain materials collected by Rawlins’ daughter, Alta R. Jensen, in preparation for her publication of The Unfavored Few: The Autobiography of Joseph L. Rawlins.
- Utah Hairdressers Association records (ACCN1826) – The Utah Hairdressers Association records (1933-1947) consist of a scrapbook, meeting minutes, convention programs, newspaper clippings, and membership lists.
- William H Behle (MS0576)- The William Harroun Behle papers (1889-2003) encompass a wide range of Dr. Behle’s professional life at the University of Utah and in particular, the area of ornithology. Additional boxes 56-58 added to the existing digital collection.
- George A Smith (MS0036) – The George A. Smith family papers (1731-1968) are composed of personal papers of George A. Smith, Elias Smith, John Henry Smith, George Albert Smith, Lucy Emily Woodruff Smith Wilford Woodruff and Emily Smith Stewart. Additional materials added.
- Superfunds Records Center records (ACCN2107 )- The Superfund Records Center records (1990-2002) contains reports, histories, news clippings, and other documents pertaining to the Environmental Protection agency in relation to Kennecott Copper Mines North Facilities, South Arm, and surrounding areas within Utah.
- Federal Resource Corporation papers (ACCN1513)- The Federal Resources Corporation records (1930-1989) contain the “dead files” of a company that, through a long series of mergers and acquisitions, most of which took place in the 1960s, became a force in the world of mineral exploration, development, and mining.
- John W. Sugden Papers (ACCN2720)- John W. Sugden (1922-2003) was an architect and professor of architecture in Utah. The collection contains correspondence, research materials, and blueprints. This digital collection consists of architectural blueprints and drawings for Alta Lodge.
- Neal Astle Papers (ACCN1930) – Special Collections Reading Room access – The Neil L. Astle papers (1908-1998) contain documents, correspondence, articles, brochures, notebooks, proposals, awards, drawings, and blueprints pertaining to the schooling and career of architect Neil L. Astle.
- Edward H. Snyder papers (Accn3121) – The E. H. Snyder family mining papers (1885-2005) details the development of mining within the Intermountain West and the history of the involvement of the Snyder family in mining.
- A. O. Garrett Papers – (ACCN2482) – The A. O. Garrett papers (1860-1947) consist of his book Spring Flora of the Wasatch Front along with correspondence related to his personal and professional career. The collection also contains general information such as plant identification lists and research related materials. Garrett was a botany professor.
Audio Visual Materials
- United States Ski and Snowboard Association (A0974) – New batch added, access in Special Collections Reading Room.
- University of Utah Basketball (A0002) – Additional batch added.
- Trent Harris (A0832) – New batch added, access in Special Collections Reading Room. The Trent Harris independent film collection (1997-2007) consists of production elements and completed films by prominent Utah independent filmmaker Trent Harris.
- James and Barbara Lamph (A1290) – additions to the Home Movie Collection. The James C. and Barbara D. Lamph home movie collection consists of recordings of their family gatherings and travels.
- KUTV News Collection – campus access (A0303) – 15 tapes added.
- KUTV Extra (A0303) – 15 tapes added. KUTV EXTRA was a news magazine type show that aired from 1977 to 1984.
Photographs
- University of Utah Ski Team – Box 1 (P0372) – First box of an ongoing project to make more Utah Ski Team photos available in the digital library
- Darrell Mills Barnes (P1015) – Copy prints of the East High Football team and other subjects
- Aurora Club (P0854) – The Aurora Club photograph collection consists of photographs of a social event held by the club in 1973. The Aurora Club started out as a social sewing club in 1913 but grew to include other activities such as book readings, speakers, tours, and charitable projects.
- Russell L. Bragg photograph collection (P1026) – The Russell L. Bragg photograph collection contains 4 laser prints of photos labeled as the former Army Airforce base Camp Kearns with Bragg’s identifications taped to the photo.
- Portrait photograph collection (P0190) – Additions to an existing collection.
- Jeanne Tellier Leeson (P0859) – The Jeanne Tellier Leeson photograph collection consists of photos of the Utah Symphony and Maurice Abravanel.
- Utah Schools (P0428) The Utah Schools Photograph collection contains exterior views of various public schools in Utah. (circa 1900). The collection also contains photographs of students, teachers, and various school activities.
- Philo T. Farnsworth photograph collection (P0437)- Photographs from the collection of the famous inventor of the all electronic television system.
- John A. Dixon (P0441) , The John A. Dixon photograph collection consists of images of various members of the Dixon family and photographs documenting the life and career of John A. Dixon.
- Marguerite McQuiston Evans negative collection (P0723), This collection of negatives includes a portrait of Marguerite McQuiston Evans and others during her tenure as Director of the Service Club in Wendover, Nevada, during 1944.
- Sheridan L. McGarry (P0760), Two black and white prints of the First Presidency of the L.D.S. church from 1847 to 1854 and an additional print.
- Robert L. Autry (P0998), The Robert “Bob” Autry photograph collection contains images of the ParkWest ski resort, now known as Canyons Resort, from its opening in 1968 through the 1970s. The images depict skiers skiing on the mountain, a ski class with Bob Autry, construction on the resort, aerial views of the Snyderville area, and Bob Autry with his son.
- John F. Flanagan (P1004), The John F. Flanagan photograph collection consists of one black and white photo print of John F. Flanagan.
- Jan H. Brunvand (P0713), The Jan Harold Brunvand photograph collection contains a wide variety of images. There are various photographs of Jan Brunvand with KUTC, Channel 2 News, on the David Letterman Show, and being filmed by Storn Peterson.
- Lorille Horne Miller (P0808) – Images documenting activities at the International Women’s Year conference in Houston in 1977.
- Nels Anderson (P0122) – The Nels Anderson photograph collection contains portraits of Nels Anderson and of various members of his family as well as images from the Meuse River–Argonne Forest campaign in France in the fall of 1918. A large set in this collection shows graves of World War I soldiers of the 145th Field Artillery.
- Albert C Allen (P0345) – The Albert C. Allen photograph collection contains portraits of Albert C. Allen, members of his family, and soldiers. The collection also contains photographs documenting Allen’s service with the Utah Volunteer Artillery, and his participation in the Ute Indian Wars, the Spanish-American War, and the Philippines Rebellion.
- Galen J. Ross photograph collection (P0535) – The Galen J. Ross photograph is a promotional image used for Ross’ political run for Attorney General.
- Don Lind (P0704) – The Don Lind photograph collection contains research materials regarding experiments conducted by Lind in association with NASA during his tenure as professor at Utah State University. These experiments include the Interstellar Gas Experiment (1984-1990) and Space Lab III (Auroral Observations, 1983-1987). The collection also contains thirty-two photographs of the Aurora Borealis as seen in Alaska, September 1984.
- Alexander Woodruff “Woody” Anderson (additions) (P0457) – The Woody Anderson collection consists of nineteen digital scans made from prints loaned to the Special Collections department by Mr. Anderson for the Utah Ski Archives Ski Affair.
- Utah Interurban Railroads (P0820) – The Utah interurban railroads photograph collection consists of images of engines, passenger cars, and other equipment used by various interurban railroads in Utah. 27 images added.
- David T. Lewis (P0782) – The David T. Lewis photograph collection consists of various family and individual portraits of the Lewis family.
- Oscar W. and Mary Preston Moyle (P0876) – Oscar W. and Mary Preston Moyle were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The bulk of the collection, found in the Manuscripts division of Special Collections, consists of diaries and correspondence documenting their travels and families. The Oscar W. and Mary Preston Moyle photograph collection contains four black and white portraits of Oscar W. and Mary Preston Moyle’s family, including: James Moyle, Mary (Snider) Wood, and her husband, Daniel Wood.
- George S. and Algie E. Ballif (P0860) – The George S. and Algie E. Ballif photograph collection contains images of Algie Ballif.
- Clarence Stevenson (P0718) – The Clarence Stevenson photograph collection consists of images surrounding the mining and social life of Eastern Utah during the first half of the 20th century. 1 addition.
- Snow Basin Ski Resort (P0374) – Nearly 160 photographs, most donated by the National Forest Service, document the beginnings of this northern Utah ski area. Dates on the photographs begin in the early 1940s, with details of ski technique and early skiing equipment. 2 additions.
- Joseph L. Chandler Days of ’47 photograph scrapbooks (P0754) – The Joseph L. Chandler Days of ’47 photograph scrapbooks includes photos connected with the Pioneer Day parade and celebration in Salt Lake City.
Print and Journal
- University of Utah Bureau of Indian Services Publications – A small collection of newsletters created by the University of Utah Bureau of Indian Services from 1950s-1970s. Topics include community development and social services for Indigenous people of the Intermountain West.
- Rocky Mountain Woman – The Rocky Mountain Woman was a free, monthly women’s newspaper published in Salt Lake City, Utah during the 1970s. Topics covered include Intermountain West regional and national politics relating to women’s issues, religion, and local advertisements.
Oral Histories
- Additions to Construyendo Latinidad (Constructing Latinx Identity) in the Intermountain West – This Oral History project developed by Professor Ed Munoz documents the construction of Latinidad in the Intermountain West during the turn of the 21st century.
Rare Books
- Additions to Middle East Collections – Selections of Rare Books from the library’s Middle East Collection. The collection includes hundreds of unique Middle Eastern and Islamic manuscripts in languages such Arabic, Persian, Ottoman Turkish, Urdu, and Coptic, dating as early as the ninth century CE.
- Additions to Rare Books – The Rare Books Division of Special Collections holds more than 80,000 books, maps and ephemera representing the written record of world history from ancient clay tablet to 21st century artists’ books.
