From July – September, Digital Library Services has added over 6700 new items to the digital library from Special Collections, details about selected new collections and topics are covered below.
Photos
Utah Ski Team Photos (P0372) – Over 3700 photos added to this collection. The University of Utah Ski Team Collection contains a wide variety of images ranging from the first ski team sponsored by the University of Utah in 1946, to modern digital photographs of skiers competing in downhill (Alpine) and cross-country (Nordic) races.
Bingham Canyon landscapes photograph collection (P0972) – The Bingham Canyon landscapes photograph collection includes industrial photographs of the Bingham Canyon copper mine, locally known as the Kennecott Copper Mine, dated approximately 1965-1985. The images depict aerial views of the open-pit, construction around the pit, and dirt roads around Bingham Mine.
Frisco, Utah, stereograph collection (P2114) – Frisco was a mining camp located in Beaver County, Utah that was active between 1879 to 1929. This collection contains 9 stereographs depicting Frisco and its surrounding area in 1881, during the silver boom.
Everett Ruess Family collection (P1194) – 2 additions to the collection. Everett Ruess was an artist and writer who disappeared in the Utah desert in 1934. The Everett Ruess Family photograph collection contains photographs, negatives, postcards, albums, and glass slides of Everett, Stella, Christopher, and Waldo Ruess and their travels between 1900 and 1985.
VaLois Chipman photograph collection (P0554) – 8 items added. The VaLois Chipman photograph collection contains photographs of VaLois with others throughout her life.
Pat Miller Collection – 128 photos added to Ski and Snow Sports Photo Archives. Pat Miller (1948-2013) served as head coach of the University of Utah Ski Team, as president of the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association and as a member of the National Collegiate Athletics Association Skiing Rules Committee.
Chamber Music Society of Salt Lake City photograph collection (P0552) – The Chamber Music Society of Sale Lake City photograph collection contains portraits of musicians (individual and group) as follows: Udo Reinemann, Mendelssohn String Quartet, and the Golub-Kaplan-Carr Trio.
Grover Vernon McCracken Collection (P1135) – Grover Vernon McCracken (1919-2001) was a military veteran who served in the 84th Naval Construction Battalion (Seabees) during World War II. The Grover Vernon McCracken photograph collection contains black-and-white photographs documenting McCracken’s family and friends and his WWII military service in Australia, the Philippines, and Japan.
Babcock Performing Readers (P1030) – 112 photos added. The Babcock Performing Readers photographs (1980-1996) are comprised of scrapbooks and photos showing the Babcock performing readers presentations, events, and parties.
Alta Ski Resort Collection (P0371) – The Alta Ski Resort photograph collection contains photographs detailing the historic and scenic beauty of Alta from the early days of both mining and skiing.
Manuscripts
Paul Thatcher Family Papers (MS 0198) – The Paul Thatcher family papers (1809-1972) contain diaries, letters, biographies, and reminiscences from two prominent families of Utah, the Thatcher’s of Logan and the Smoot’s of Provo.
Italian-American Civic Records (ACCN 2751) – The Italian-American Civic League records consist of programs from the All-State Italian Day held at Lagoon.
Rudger Clawson papers (MS0481) – Items available in restricted collection. The Rudger Clawson papers (1870-1943) consists of memoirs, autobiographical accounts, diaries, letter books, loose letters, scrapbooks, newspaper and periodical clippings, printed books and miscellaneous documents. Clawson served in many official capacities in the LDS Church, including missionary, stake president, apostle, and second counselor to the president of the church.
Grace Atkin Woodbury papers (ACCN 1512) – The Grace Atkin Woodbury papers (1884-1964) contain diaries, correspondence, notebooks, manuscripts, and memorabilia. The documents provide an intimate record of Woodbury’s life and her perceptions of the world in which she lived.
Italian Archives (MS0230) – The Italian archives (1897-1978) includes ledgers, minute books, and financial records dealing with the Italian fraternal organizations in Utah. Most of the material is focused on the Stella d’ America Lodge No.77 in Helper, Utah and the Societa Italiana Cristoforo Colombo organizations
Audio Visual Materials

KUTV Extra – 25 Additional films added to the collection. The KUTV News Collection is housed in the Multimedia Division of Special Collections and includes thousands of film reels and videotapes with airchecks, edited segments, and series from Utah’s Channel 2 ranging from the 1960s to the early 2000s. The bulk of the collection ranges between the late 1970s to the 1990s, while materials before and after this range are few and far between.
Judith and Stanley Hallet Independent Film Collection – 5 additional films added.
Trent Harris Independent film collection – 33 additional films added. The Trent Harris independent film collection (1997-2021) consists of production elements and completed films by prominent Utah independent filmmaker Trent Harris. Materials include feature narrative films, documentaries, experimental films, and newsmagazine programs.
KUTV News Collection – Campus access – 72 films added. The KUTV News Collection is housed in the Multimedia Division of Special Collections and includes thousands of film reels and videotapes with airchecks, edited segments, and series from Utah’s Channel 2 ranging from the 1960s to the early 2000s.
Dialysis in wonderland – VHS videocassette about a University of Utah program for dialysis patients involving rafting on the Colorado River with portable dialysis machines. Includes scenes from a 1979 test run along the river near Moab in 1979 and from a trip through the Grand Canyon on June 7-15, 1982.
University of Utah Marching Band – 7 items added. The University of Utah Marching Band audio-visual collections consists of video and audio recordings of The Pride of Utah performing during games and other events.
Frank Salisbury – 7 items added to reading room access AV collection. The Frank B. Salisbury collection consists of video and audiotapes related to his research on UFOs and plant physiology.
Ski Aces, Ski Troops, Alta Ski School – 1 item added to reading room access AV collection from Alan K. Engen collection.
William Stewart Gardiner (A0588) – 41 films added to Home Movie Collection. The W. Stewart Gardiner audio-visual collection consists of home movies related to his career as a river runner, as well as the Gardiner family in outdoor recreation settings
Park City Mountain Resort audio-visual collection (A0664) – 7 items added to restricted collection. The Park City Mountain Resort audio-visual collection (1961-2002) contains film, video and audio recordings, almost all of which are directly related to Park City Mountain Resort’s role in Utah’s winter sports industry and international competative ski ciruit. The colleciton includes promotional materials for the ski area, Utah’s ski industry at large and the United States Ski Team, footage of the World Cup and other competitions held at the resort, ski films by Stein Ericksen and Warren Miller, and many other materials relating to the ski and snowboard industry in Utah and beyond.
Uranium Oral Histories (A0343) – 2 additional items added to restricted collection. The Uranium oral history audio recordings consists of 195 reel-to-reel audiotapes with interviews with uranium miners and workers from Utah and the West.
Diane Orr Independent Film collection – Additional item added to restricted collection.
Cold Fusion Collection A0336 – 7 items added to restricted collection. The Cold Fusion audio-visual collection consists of audio and video tapes with press conferences, meetings, and newscasts related to cold fusion
Basketball Video Collection – Additional items added.
Rare Books
Middle East Manuscripts Collection – 10 items added. The Aziz Atiya Middle East Library is recognized internationally as a major center for research in Middle East studies and has been considered “the fifth largest of such a collection in North America.” The collection includes hundreds of unique Middle Eastern and Islamic manuscripts in languages such Arabic, Persian, Ottoman Turkish, Urdu, and Coptic, dating as early as the ninth century CE. Also included are more than 3,000 printed books from and about the Middle East.
Oral Histories
Construyendo Latinidad – 2 oral histories added. This oral history project documents the construction of Latinidad in the Intermountain West during the turn of the 21st century.
Digital Library Services Faculty/crowdsourced projects
Utah Religious Architecture Collection – 60 photos added. The Utah Religious Architecture Photograph Collection displays the history and variety of religious communities in Utah through images of existing and historical houses of worship.
