Jan 07, 2016 New Sustainability Book Group for the New Semester
This semester, Amy Brunvand, a librarian subject specialist for environmental & sustainability studies, is starting up a new book group “in hopes that people from across the campus community can come together to share ideas and conversation about sustainability.”
Amy explains, “I got the idea of a book group last year at a meeting of people on campus who are interested in climate change and fossil fuel divestment. People kept mentioning great books that they had read and I jotted down the titles. I thought that there must be a lot of people on campus who are interested in reading these types of books and that the Library would be a great place for us to connect with one another.
For Spring 2016 I picked four books that I hope will inspire interesting and provocative discussion—three new books and one classic. I hope that the book group will prove to be sustainable and people who come to the discussions will suggest books for future readings.
If any or all of these selections seems like your kind of book, I hope to see you soon at the Marriott Library.”
All discussions take place from 12:00 P.M. until 1:00 P.M. in room 1726 A on the first floor.
The books and dates are as follows:
- Jan. 15: “This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. The Climate” by Naomi Klein
- Feb 19: “Feral: Searching for Enchantment on the Frontiers of Rewilding” by Georgre Monbiot
- Mar 11: “The Sixth Extinction: an Unnatural History” by Elizabeth Kolbert
- Apr: 15: “The Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture” by Wendell Berry
