New Library Services: Building a Mobile VR Classroom

By Tony Sams

The J. Willard Marriott Library, in partnership with Teaching and Learning Image depicting a virtual reality computer, headset, and controllers available at the Marriott Library.Technologies, and the College of Biological Sciences, received CARES funds to design and build the U’s first off-site VR classroom to support Dr. Colleen Farmer’s course, Biology 3665: Form, Function, and Adaptation of Animals. The VR Kits include Realize Medical’s, Elucis software. The modeling software will be used to look at 3D medical imaging in a collaborative, virtual environment. Each student will receive an Oculus Quest 2, a Lenovo VR Ready Laptop, and specialized hardware to support course learning outcomes. Students will use the VR kits throughout the semester-length course. After the spring semester, the VR kits will go into circulation as a mobile VR classroom to continue supporting the teaching, learning, and research needs of departments across campus.
