Mar 01, 2018 Selected research roundup
Members of the Digital Library Services group and the Digital Infrastructure Development group frequently collaborate on projects, and we often publish and present about the improvements we’ve made in the digital library over the years. Here’s a selected list of publications and presentations that showcase our collaborative work over the years.
One of the major projects we’ve worked on recently is migrating from CONTENTdm to a system built on open source components which we call Solphal, because the technology stack for the system is Solr, Phalcon, and nginx. We’ve published articles on aspects of the migration for Digital Collections and Utah Digital Newspapers.
- “A Clean Sweep: The Tools and Processes of a Successful Metadata Migration.” The Journal of Web Librarianship. November 2017. Neatrour, A., Myntti, J., Brunsvik, M., Maringanti, H., McBride, B., Witkowski, A. http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/19322909.2017.1360167
Pre-print also available at: https://collections.lib.utah.edu/details?id=1293871 - “Massive Newspaper Migration — Moving 22 Million Records from CONTENTdm to Solphal.” Witkowski, A., Neatrour, A., Myntti, J., and McBride, B. July/August 2017. http://www.dlib.org/dlib/july17/witkowski/07witkowski.html
- “Metadata migration managed: Fixing metadata that was up to no good.” Presentation given at the ALCTS Cataloging Norms Interest Group meeting at the American Library Association Midwinter Meeting, Atlanta, GA. https://collections.lib.utah.edu/details?id=1283548
One of the things that made the migration successful was the development of an in-house metadata/digitization workflow management tool, that helps bridge our digital library and digital preservation systems.
- “The SIMP Tool: Facilitating Digital Library, Metadata, and Preservation Workflow at the University of Utah’s J. Willard Marriott Library” D-Lib Magazine, July/August 2014. Neatrour, A, Brunsvik, M., Buckner, S., McBride, B., and Myntti, J.http://www.dlib.org/dlib/july14/neatrour/07neatrour.html
We’ll be featuring additional collaborative work here, so stay tuned!
