Student Employee Creates Video That Goes Viral

Jordan Hanzon, a student in the U’s film program and a part-time employee at the Marriott Library, used some of his free time during winter break to edit Pixar’s Inside Out.

“I really enjoyed the film and its message. I wondered if the film would still hold strong without the “inside” portions.”

Jordan, who especially enjoys the task of video editing, decided to edited out all of the “emotion characters” represented in the main character—Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger. The result is a shortened version of Pixar’s story about a young girl coping with changes in her life.

The video was posted to the social media site Reddit and from there it spread quickly to other sites such as the Huffington Post, Dorkly, USA Today, and other outlets. Jordan was also interviewed by a local Fox 13 news station. The video has been viewed more than 1.8 million times and has been embedded more than 4 million times.

“I didn’t expect the video to spread so broadly and so quickly,” explained Jordan. “I’m really happy that everyone is enjoying the edit and the movie itself. It’s a testament to great film-making that the story still holds so well with so much of the content removed.”

Jordan continues to study editing in the U’s film department and working for the library’s Marketing and Public Relations department. He hopes to continue to have more opportunities to edit and create film.
