Top Reads for Banned Books Week

Curated by Librarian Allyson Mower

Be sure to check out this year’s Banned Book’s Week speaker Laurie Halse Anderson who has a banned book of her own called “Speak” – a story of a young teenager and surviving a traumatic event.  There are so many (thousands, in fact!) of good books that have received challenges. We’ve tagged them in the library’s catalog for easy finding. My favorites include:

Cover of "Speak" by Laurie Halse Anderson. A face partially obscured by a tree with gray leaves. The tone is somber, conveying a sense of introspection.

A story of a young teenager surviving a traumatic event.

Cover of "Gender Queer: A Memoir" by Maia Kobabe. A character stands in water, their reflection beneath them. The sky and trees add a serene, introspective tone.

I can definitely imagine someone’s life being saved by this book!

Cover of "The Diary of a Young Girl" features a black-and-white photo of a smiling girl with dark hair. The tone is reflective and historical.

My all-time favorite – love her writing, the storytelling, and the indelible impact that preserving stories creates.

Close-up of a brown owl's eye reflecting two silhouetted figures. Text reads "Bless Me, Ultima" by Rudolfo Anaya, featuring earthy, mystical tones.

This book contains both the real and the otherworldly that happens in the borderlands – both physical and cultural.

Silhouette of a woman reading in a rocking chair against a purple-pink sunset through lace-curtained windows. Text: "The Color Purple" by Alice Walker.

Celie’s financial and personal success is so inspiring – I still don’t understand what’s behind the challenges to this book (well, any book really).

Cover of "Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood" by Marjane Satrapi. Features a bold red background with a somber young girl in a black headscarf framed in black and blue.

Like the other titles, this story of personal freedom and discovery of one’s own power is told through beautiful illustrations and memorable writing.
