Jan 07, 2020 Virtual GIS Project Consultations Now Available
By Justin Sorensen
Hey everyone! I’m Justin Sorensen with the Marriott Library’s GIS Services department. For the Spring 2020 semester, GIS Services will be testing a new option for assisting students, staff, and faculty of the University of Utah with GIS projects they are developing.
In the past, we have successfully offered in-office consultations where individuals come into the Library, discuss questions they have, and receive assistance with the development of their projects. These in-office consultations will continue to be offered, but to expand our options even further, we will now be offering virtual consultations by employing the remote conferencing capabilities of Zoom.
The virtual meeting environment of Zoom will allow us to offer the same collaborative services of an in-office consultation, but with the added features of video chat and screen sharing, making it possible to receive support and assistance remotely as you develop your project.
The process of scheduling a virtual GIS consultation is very simple. Start by visiting the GIS Services website, select the “Schedule an Appointment” button and choose an available appointment time that best fits your schedule. Fill out the information form and select “Virtual Appointment” from the appointment type drop-down menu. After submitting the appointment request, you will receive an e-mail containing information about your appointment and a link for accessing the virtual GIS meeting room at that time. No log-in will be required – just select the “Join as a Guest” option to access the meeting room.
(*Download of the Zoom installer may be required – please verify that your system is able to support a Zoom virtual meeting before your scheduled appointment).
So even if you are unable to come to the Library for project assistance, our GIS Services department can still be there for you to support the development of your project.
Happy Mapping!
