Virtual Reality Storytelling

Promotional flyer for the VR experience Traveling While Black.

By Tony Sams

As winter’s powdery grip holds on to us for the next several months it’s time to reach for a warm cup of coffee and settle into a great story. Listening to a great story can be a life-changing experience and virtual reality provides a great medium for new narrative explorations.

The Marriott Library’s Virtual Reality Services has the newest technology to immerse you in some truly wonderful experiences. Traveling While Black, a documentary from director Roger Ross Williams will immerse you in the stories of historical black travelers (see The Negro Motorist Green Book) as well as a powerful interview with Tamir Rice’s mother. Williams says, “When you experience this documentary in VR it’s all around you, and you can’t escape it.” The VR experience has been called “a force to help viewers confront historical and contemporary realities” by Forbes Magazine.
