A Fabulous Affair!

Hats off to the Ski Archives Board who put on an incredible party to benefit the library’s Ski Archives! More than 500 skiiers, snowboarders, athletes, outdoor enthusiasts, and volunteers gathered at Little America Hotel on November 7 for the 27th Ski Affair event that included a silent auction, dinner, and a program highlighting those honored with awards.

The University of Utah Ski Team received the library’s History-Maker Award for their historic achievements and their 11th NCAA championship in 2017. When the ski team won the national championship in March of 2017, it marked the first such title by any sport since the University of Utah joined the Pac-12 conference in 2011. Their 11th NCAA title is the most by any U athletics team.

Ski industry executive and former member of the U ski team, Ron Steele received the S. J. Quinney Award for his contributions to snow sports. Steele was a three-time All-American while skiing for the U from 1974 to 1978 and a U.S. Olympic team member in 1972. He is a 40-year employee of Group Rossignol North America, serving as president since 2012.

Molly Laramie, long-time volunteer on the Ski Affair Board, was awarded the Sue Raemer Award. Having served more than 10 outstanding years on the board, Molly has been responsible for arranging, design, and delivery of the awards given to the honorees of the S.J. Quinney Award and the History Maker Award.

Gregory Thompson, Associate Dean for Special Collections at the Marriott Library, commented, “As the largest, most comprehensive archive of its kind, the Utah Ski Archives reaches the national and international community, chronicling the lives and careers of skiers who come to Utah from across the globe to compete and enjoy our incredible winter sports terrain.”

The event raised more than $60,000 to support the Utah Ski Archives, which was founded in 1989 and is now the largest archive of its kind. Congratulations to everyone involved in this hugely successful event, an evening full of effervescence and genuine appreciation for the Utah Ski Archives.
