New One Button Studio(s) Update, February 2020

Example of the new one button studios on level 2 of the Marriott Library.

By Robert Nelson

Greetings,

The original One Button Studio (OBS), located in the Fine Arts Library (Level 2), has been an immensely popular service. Students, staff, and faculty can book the studio to conduct simple video recordings for University projects.

The ability to not need Media Studios intercession in a limited hour Faculty Space, allows for University community multi-media creation without encumbering a “process” for access. The success of the OBS came at a bit of a “cost.” The Studio is in such high demand that sometimes it can take days to find an ideal free time slot.

Therefore, Student Computing fees allowed for the purchase of two new modular studios created by a company called Vocalbooth. After some fits and starts, One Button Studio 2 and One Button Studio 3 are almost ready to go live.

The new OBS’s are located along the northern wall of Protospace (Level 2), just past the 3D printing work space. Soundproofed, with the same USB insert features of the original OBS, all that is needed is for the arrival of the ordered Mac computers to run the One Button software.

Once those computers are installed, look for One Button Studios 2 and 3 on the Library Scheduler. Log in with your 2FA and find a time. Hopefully, with two new studios in service, there will be much less of a backlog of popular time slots.

While the new studios are intended for video production, there has been a request for a booth just for (audio) podcasting. Hopefully, the 2020 round of Student Computing fees purchases will allow for a Vocalbooth podcasting studio: with a flat table, digital recorder and professional desk top condenser microphones.

This will allow for ease of student scheduling access for podcasters, who will have a quick place to record without the formal scheduling process of the Audio Studio (1705X) located in the Faculty Center.

Look for an announcement soon when OBS 2 and OBS 3 are available. Please test their efficacy for us and let Creativity & Innovation Services Staff know what works and what needs improving.
