University of Utah Press Awards

  • Gasa Gasa Girl Goes to Camp: A Nisei Youth behind a World War II Fence by Lily Yuriko Nakai Havey won the $10,000 Evans Biography Award, presented by the Mountain West Center for Regional Studies at Utah State University on September 25, 2015. The book was selected by regional and national panels of judges, including5 Alberto Hurtado, the Paul H. and Doris Eaton Travis Chair in Modern American History at the University of Oklahoma; Teresa Jordan, past writer in residence at the University of Utah and the University of Nebraska; and Clyde A. Milner II, Professor Emeritus of American regionalism and cultural identity at Arkansas State University. Gasa Gasa Girl Goes to Camp was also selected as one of three “Best of the Best of University Presses” by the American Library Association and the Association of American University Presses (ALA/AAUP).

 

  • The Mormon History Association Best Biography Award was presented to Julie Neuffer for Helen Andelin and the Fascinating Womanhood Movement.

  • At the International Latino Book Awards at ALA, Gary and Rose Neeleman’s Tracks in the Amazon: The Day-to-Day Life of the Workers on the Madeira-Mamoré Railroad won Best Book in Nonfiction in Portuguese.

  • The Utah Division of State History, at its 63rd annual Utah State History Conference, presented two Meritorious Book Awards, both to U of U Press titles:

Michael W. Homer for Joseph’s Temples: The Dynamic Relationship between Freemasonry and Mormonism and Armando Solórzano for We Remember, We Celebrate, We Believe/Recuerdo, Celebración, y Esperanza: Latinos in Utah.
