Pride Week, Day of Giving and More!

Dean’s Message, April 2024

As they say, April showers bring May flowers, and I am very much looking forward to seeing some signs of spring! Here at the library we’re entering April with a busy start, as this week we kick off U Giving Day and we take part in Pride Week on campus.

Dean of Libraries Sarah Shreeves (center) takes a break to meet two of the library scholarship winners, Lucy Leary (left) and Danny Lin (right).

Special collections contains a number of collections related to the history of the LGBTQIA+ movement locally. On Tuesday, April 3, our Special Collections librarian will showcase some materials that speak to this history. Some items on display include the Utah Pride Collection, which contains photos of events, marches, parades and other gatherings and the newsletter of the Affirmation group, formed in 1977 to serve members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The library is once again part of U Giving Day – a two-day fund drive lasting 1,850 minutes, in celebration of the year of the university’s founding. This year, donors have the choice of giving to the Book Arts Program, our Special Collections Fund or the student scholarship fund. Or maybe give to all three areas!

Lastly, I’m delighted to announce that we’re now offering a research fellowship for those interested in working with our Special Collections. Named after the late Dr. Floyd O’Neil, former Director of the American West Center and dear friend to the library, individuals can apply for the $3,500 fellowship by May 3, 2024.

There is never a dull moment within the walls of this wonderful library. I hope you will find time to swing by the library when you’re next in our part of campus. And if you ever have questions or would like a tour, feel free to contact me anytime.

Sincerely,

Sarah L. Shreeves
Alice Sheets Marriott Dean of Libraries
